China's New Voices: Popular Music, Ethnicity, Gender, and Politics, 1978-1997 by Nimrod Baranovitch, This is the most comprehensive study to date of the rich popular music scene in contemporary China. Focusing on the city of Beijing and drawing upon extensive fieldwork, "China's New Voices "shows that during the 1980s and 1990s, rock and pop music, combined with new technologies and the new market economy, have enabled marginalized groups to achieve a new public voice that is often independent of the state. Nimrod Baranovitch analyzes this phenomenon by focusing on three important contexts: ethnicity, gender, and state politics. His study is a fascinating look at the relationship between popular music in China and broad cultural, social, and political changes that are taking place there. Baranovitch's sources include formal interviews and conversations conducted with some of China's most prominent rock and pop musicians and music critics, with ordinary people who provide lay perspectives on popular music culture, and with others involved in the music industry and in academia. Baranovitch also observed recording sessions, concerts, and dance parties, and draws upon TV broadcasts and many publications in Chinese about popular music.
Harmonic Overtones: Magical Vibrations in Voice and Music by Dick de Ruiter, This booklet and CD set introduces readers to the magical sounds of harmonic overtones--"the amazing phenomenon of physically playing a single note on an instrument, including the voice, and creating two or more tones at once. The resulting vibrations touch listeners on a level that is not just physical. Since ancient times, this technique has been used by different cultures to move the soul. The throat singing of acoustic groups, such as those from Tuva in China, has mesmerized audiences. Tibetan monks are also well known for this throat singing technique. The use of harmonics occurs in the music of aboriginal cultures throughout the world, in Australia, Europe, and the Americas. You also hear it in classical music and rock and roll.Harmonic Overtones explores the history of this musical technique and provides the technical information you need to create the sounds yourself. Two CDs, one with step-by-step instructions, the other with examples of harmonics from aboriginal cultures as well as its use in modern music give a complete overview of the technique and its healing properties. The book also includes an extensive reading and music list for those who want to further investigate the spiritual magic of sound.
